Mistaken Fairytales

When I was a kid

They told me fairy tales

With handsome princes

And princesses with ponytails

The princes were said to be strong

Formidable and good looking too

They were also intelligent

And every good quality you could brew

The princesses were not this special

They were just beautiful

With evil parents

And injustice plentiful

The princesses would always wait

Locked in towers or with dragons

The princes would come and fight

Rescue them, take them home in wagons

As a kid I loved it

The palace, horses and lakes

But growing up I realised

There was this big mistake

Why were the princesses,

Just mere objects of beauty?

While the princes were fortunate

And also considered mighty?

Why weren’t the princesses,

Also strong and wise?

And instead of waiting for their Prince Charming,

Rescue themselves, start their own paradise?

From long before in time

The society has looked down upon women

But actually the truth is

They are are equal to men

When I write my fairytales

They’ll be filled with dragons and goons

But the princes would be locked

And the princesses would rescue them soon

  1. So true Akshita. This is driven deep into our society, be it in fairy tales, movies, workplace or schools. Glad that today the change of mindset has been initiated, but it will take time for people to be completely out of this stereotype.

    1. Exactly.
We need to have stronger role models and characters than the same stereotypical knight in shining armour and damsel in distress.
Glad you agree with me. Thanks!!

  2. I think the “damsel in distress” role is way too overrated. We need better and stronger role models for the current generation.

Loved this poem, especially the last lines! 😁

  3. Very true, Akshita. I’ve pondered upon many fairy tales and fables I’ve read as a child. Back then, those were enjoyable but now there are lots of moral clashes popping up in mind.

    Wonderful poem!!

  4. Beautiful post Akshita. I agree with you. Growing up, I questioned fairy tales too. It was just a medium to propagate the patriarchy and the notion about men being stronger. But from whom?
Loved the poem. Keep writing ❤️

  5. Haha… Your last lines are challenging. Btw Yess I do believe in equality. Both men and women have equal potential. Yes in our old stories princess are represented just a beautiful object.

  6. Totally agreed…even though fairy tales are admired more by young girls, they are tailored to glorify the other way around. This piece seems to have the aroma of of real fairydust.🔮
